An aviation borescope is a camera on a stick that keeps you from splitting a case to look at a compressor, a combustor, or a bay a flashlight cannot own. People who type “best aviation borescope” are shopping a look, not a trophy: a probe that fits the port in the AMM, a tip that articulates onto the pressure face, light that does not wash every nick into glare, and a still with a filename you can put on the card. A cheap “industrial” USB stick will show a blob and die in a toolbox. You can look with a toy. You should not release with one.
Set the job before you set the budget. A personal kit for a line AMT is a different purchase from a Part 145 standard that quality will have to defend. Four-way articulation is how you see the far side of a vane; two-way is usable if the port is kind; rigid still earns its keep in straight holes. Record stills, not a live view you will remember wrong at the desk. Ignore carbon-fiber handles and “4K” badges. What the camera is for — and what it is not
On engines, the usual jobs are compressor and turbine blade faces, leading edges from a named port, combustion-chamber views, and the occasional look down a tube the cowling will not give you. On airframes: cavities, behind liners, a flap well the flashlight only half-lights. The AMM or engine manual names the port, the look, and often the accept/reject language. That language is the product. Your memory of “it looked fine” is not.
A borescope is not a substitute for general visual inspection. GVI is touching distance, raking light, and honest eyes on a lap or a fastener. The camera does not own filiform under paint or a missing cotter. It is not eddy current testing: ET is a qualified method with a technique sheet. If the card says ET the hole, a still of the skin is not done. And it is not a C-check. A C-check opens systems in a hangar. A scope is a look through a hole the program already knew about.
- Use it when the manual names a port and a look — blades, combustor, a cavity a mirror will not own.
- Do not use it to skip a GVI, a teardown the SRM called, or an NDT task you are not qualified to sign.
- Stills belong on the card. A live-view shrug is how “it looked okay Tuesday” becomes a finding on Friday.
- If you cannot name stage, side, and clock position, you are sightseeing.
Probe diameter versus the port in the AMM
Measure the port. Then buy the probe. Engine bosses on many turbines cluster in the 4–6 mm class; some accessory ports take a fatter tube. Airframe cavities are more forgiving — 5.5–8 mm is common — but a fat probe that will not make the first bend is a paperweight. Working length matters as much as diameter. Plan 1–3 m for most engine work; longer only if you have a named long-run job and a way to keep the tube from scraping a blade you came to inspect.
Rigid scopes are not obsolete. A straight oil passage wants a rod you can index. Flexible insertion tubes are what people mean by “borescope” in 2026: they kink, nick, and smear oil onto the next look. Budget a wipe and the discipline not to pry with the tube. Inspect the tool before the airplane — a peeling jacket or a tip that unscrews is FOD you put in the engine.
Articulation, light, and the still you can file
Two-way articulation (up/down) is the floor for engine ports that are not a straight shot. Four-way is why a mid-kit unit earns its keep: you can walk the tip onto the pressure face, suction face, and platform without guessing from one grazing angle. Hand-bent “semi-rigid” is a trainer. It will not give you a clockable nick.
Light is a buying feature people skip because the demo is shot in a studio. You want a lamp you can turn down, not just up, and a white that does not paint every steel blade gold. Depth of field matters more than a 4K badge. Capture stills in a format your shop will archive — named JPEG, engine and position in the filename — and video only when the AMM asked for motion. A screen you can read in daylight is not optional. A phone app that drops Wi-Fi every four minutes is how you buy the unit twice. Battery: twenty minutes is a toy. IP against fluids is real on engines. If you cannot replace a smashed distal end without a new handle, you own a consumable, not a system.
How to buy without a ranking
There is no honest “best” that fits a 145 turbine cell, a GA cylinder look, and a student learning ports. Buy the class that matches the inspection. Bands below are 2026 order-of-magnitude numbers, not a cart and not a SKU. Get a dated quote from a distributor or a catalog page with a date on it.

Personal kit versus a 145 standard
If you are an AMT buying a personal scope, set a ceiling, demand articulation and stills, and keep the files off a random phone. You are buying the ability to look and to show a lead what you saw — not the right to close a card the shop assigned to a calibrated unit. If the hangar has a standard, use the standard.
If you are a 145 buying a standard, the conversation is interchangeable probes, a check standard, file custody, who can interpret, and what happens when the distal end is FOD. Borescope look is often a maintenance task, not an NAS-410 method — but the moment the procedure says “qualified inspector” or the finding feeds a Level 2 card, you are in ASNT territory. Put the AMM port list on the requisition and the still-archive rule in the procedure. Then the tool has a job.
When GVI and NDT take the card
A nick you can photograph still needs the manual’s accept/reject or blend limit. Do not fall in love with the image. If the indication is in a hole or lap assigned to ET, hand it to the method — see eddy current testing. A tap-test change on honeycomb is the composite inspection desk. Worm trails under paint are filiform; a scope in a dry bay is a helper, not a morphology class.
- Read the task: port, lighting, accept/reject, what you do if you find it.
- Inspect the tool — jacket, tip, FOD, clean lens — then the airplane.
- Index engine position, stage, clock, side. A still without a place is a postcard.
- Save the still with a filename the card can carry.
- If the picture is a blob, you do not have a “clear.” Change light, articulation, or the tool.

Can I use a cheap USB borescope for engines?+
